Why might walls' teacher call on her to read when the principal walks into the room?

The teacher called on Jeannette because she "could" read.... it would be impressive to the principal.

School wasn't so bad. I was in the first grade, and my teacher, Miss Cook, always chose me to read aloud when the principal came into the classroom.
