The Glass Castle symbolizes transparency, emptiness, and impracticality. The glass castle, though it looks good from the outside is not what it seems..... this parallels Jeanette's family life.

Desert- lack of water.... lack of modern living. This symbolizes the many needs of the family that are not met.
