The main conflict is that the author (whose conflict is internal) loves her family desperately, but wishes to get away from them and their itinerant life going from one poverty stricken environment to another. The parents are unable to understand their weaknesses; this inability to understand makes their lives miserable and desperately poor beyond what most people can imagine.
