Despite her tumultuous family life, I think that Jeannette did love her family. The beginning of the book has Jeannette debating on whether she should find her mother who is collecting trash and bottles on the streets of New York. Through flashback we see that Jeannette loves her parents despite their enormous faults and abuse. She has close ties with her siblings.
