Were you surprised to learn that, as adults, Jeannette and her siblings remain close to their parents? Why or why not? Why do you think they stay close?

Actually, I'd have to say I was both. Their relationship was surprising because the parents so utterly failed their kids in every way. I can see how resentment, even hate would creep into their relationships. Still, Jeanette is a pretty loving and forgiving character. Even though her parents were pathetic in their roles, she looked for the good in them. She also felt a bond and perhaps a duty even after all had been said and done.
