The Glass Castle

The Glass Castle

Although it portrays an incredibly difficult life, The Glass Castle is not sad or self-pitying. Explain what you think is the tone of the book, and discuss how Walls achieves this effect.

Jeannette is very matter-of-fact and often detached from the story she tells.... almost like she is writing about someone else's experience. I think that Jeannette had to separate herself from the story in order for it to make any sense. She does not wallow in self-pity..... and her writing speaks to her great strength of character.
