Rex is portrayed as someone who promises his family everything, but who rarely delivers on his promises. By the end of the section, Jeanette admits and understands her father has a drinking problem, she eeven asks him to stop drinking. For Jeanette, these years are filled with anxiety and wonder. Her father, and even her mother, do not act responsibly and their relationship is volatile...... their arguments and physical violence hurt their children.
