The Glass Castle

Rex Walls often asks his children, “Have I ever let you down?” (279). This was also the last question Rex ever asks Jeannette. Why was this question (as well as the required, “No, Dad” response) so important for Rex? Why was it important to the children?

How is all of this reflected in the amount of alcohol Rex consumes?

I think the question is ironic because Rex always lets his children down. I can't think of any occasion when Rex does come through for his children. There is the illusion of coming through because any instances are merely episodic. Rex always fails his kids in the end.
