Once the stabbing incident occurred and Maureen was committed, Walls says, “Something in all of us broke that day...” (pg. 277). What is being compared in this statement? How is this comparison used to show the feelings of the Walls family?

I don't know if it is a comparison more than an analogy or metaphor saying they were all damaged.
