The Glass Castle

On pg. 22, Jeannette compares the people in her family to the cactus that grow in the desert. Reread this page and then explain what Jeannette means by this comparison.

Jeannette and her family, like cactus, didn't eat regularly. Cactus go for long periods of time without sustenance.... waiting for rainfall, and then soaking up every morsel. Jeannette describes her family in the same way.... long periods without real food, followed by gorging themselves.

We were sort of like the cactus. We ate irregularly, and when we did, we'd gorge ourselves.
