Once Jeanette finally comes to understand that Rex will never follow through on his promises, we finally see a young girl, who would always have been described as self-sufficient move toward independence. Unlike her parents, Jeanette is willing to do whatever is necessary to care for her siblings. She loves, she sacrifices, and she works to make sure her siblings can escape their life in Welch. Jeanette and her sister Lori become the parents they themselves never had for their younger siblings.
