By far her parents were her issues. Her mother's lack of empathy and maternal instincts are one issue.Her father's lack of common sense combined with his very poor parenting ability affect Jeanette greatly. These are seen throughout the book.

Jeanette walls is a child born to a life of immense hardship and struggle. Her biggest challenge through out the book is just having enough to eat. Its clear that she's becoming emaciated, by the way the kids in Welch west Virginia are picking on her, calling her names like spider legs, skeleton girl and pipe cleaner. Yet Jeanette's will to survive is strong, and I know she will ride out the storm.

I think her most significant issue/chalenge is trying to live with her family, that is going through hard times and try to make a new life out of it.
