The title of the book, The Glass Castle" represents a major theme, that being Rex's desire to provide his family with a magical, happy life for everyone. Over the course of the novel, we see Rex making plans, and even preparing the foundation to build the home he dreams of for his family. Unfortunately, we also see Rex's inability to finish a task or follow through on promises exposed in the abandonment of its construction and eventual use for disposing garbage. We see Rex's children filled with hope and belief in their father, and the way in which they see their father transform from a hero.... to a liar, who they no longer respect. The deterioration of Rex's dream mimics the deterioration of his family.
