As you can imagine, this fragments the family. Mother does not exhibit the expected empathy or desperation for her kids. Father seems to offer empty dreams instead of food. The children struggle to comprehend their hunger. The family lives emotionally fragmented and unable to function. Lack of food hinders any progress.
