How does Maureen's fear of the rats connect with her fear of strangers in Phoenix?

Maureen woke up to a rat crouching on Maureen’s blanket a few inches from her face. This was obviously most traumatizing to her.I think Phoenix suggests some sort of sexual abuse that isn't specifically mentioned.
