Even though the parents are dysfunctional, the Walls siblings are quite loyal and functional towards each other. Consider the scene when the creepy pervert comes into the house to touch Jeannette in Phoenix. Brian comes out with a hatchet to chase him away. Jeannette also came to Brian's defence when Erma touched him inappropriately. The kids eventually help each other escape the parents as they get older. Eventually the siblings all end up relocating from Welch to New York in an attempt to be liberated from the stifling environment in Welch.
