I think that the scene shows that there is still some redemption left for Rex. Rex returns to New York City at Rose Mary's request and spends that Christmas with his family. Jeannette tells her father that she may have to drop out of Barnard College because she is $1000 short on tuition. Rex gives her $950 from his poker winnings.
