The Walls kids are pretty resilient: they have to be in order to survive the horrid parenting they are given. All the children have internal conflicts over this. Jeannette, for example, must deal with her father throwing her into a lake to learn how to swim. There isn't much the children can do about their life when they are children. They simply cope the way children do. They all leave the parents as soon as they are old enough to be on their own.
