In my opinion, you can shove things out of your mind, I believe they always linger below the surface. Jeannette doesn't want to think her father's problems stemmed from sexual abuse, but after Erma's abuse of Brian.... it must have been difficult to do. Might she have buried this information..... definitely, but by mentioning it in this novel we can see that she never forgot.
