The Mexican girls beat Jeannette up badly. She ended up with pulled hair, scraped knees, bloody elbows, and a busted lip. When Jeannette got home, she made light of it with her father. This showed that she was tough, and also that her father expected her to be tough. No complaining.... no whining. Tough aside, we also see the comaraderie and close relationship between Jeanette and her siblngs, as when the same girls were waiting for Jeannette the next day, small as he was, her brother jumped into the mix to defend her.
