why mght the arrival of the jet be terrifying for the entire community

The people in the community were not used to planes flying near the community, and their only real experience was the occassional cargo plane bringing in supplies. None-the-less, the people were afraid of the "needle-nosed, single pilot jet" flying so closely at high speed, and they were further frightened by the explosions that accompied its appearance.
