In Jonas' community, parents are chosen for their ability care for and raise their children according to community rules. Rules are to be strictly adhered to, as are the daily rituals the family takes part in. To fail with their children would be equated to failure in their jobs. Parents guide their children, and yet in the end, they guide them for others to choose their futures anyway. Parental success is judged by the children's conformity to rules and their dedication to the community. Parents are responsible for raising good children, who do what their told without question.... children in whom all sense of individuality has been eliminated for the sake of sameness and harmony within the community.
