Why don't children know what animals are

This community is carefully controlled and contrived: they seem separate from the natural world. It is never fully explained why there are no animals, but I would think it has something to do with Elders wanting to have complete control over emotions. Animals can illicit emotional connections that the Elders cannot control. Small children are given comfort animals that they are required to give up when they are 8.
