Music is important because it's something Jonas has never heard. For Jonas, the music becomes a symbol of hope, a symbol of differences, and a symbol of regeneration. It signifies his arrival in "Elsewhere", and the beginning of a new life.

He heard people singing. Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo.

Jonas had never heard music before in his life, only until when he arrived in "Elsewhere". This signifies a new life and a new beginning for Jonas and Gabriel and arriving at a new community/ place.
