The book's society values conformity and ignorance. The community is really a dystopia where adults have the emotional maturity of children. People are expected to follow a rigid set of rules without questioning them. Their "happiness" is very contrived and superficial. As long as the people do what the Elders mandate, they live their lives in blissful ignorance until they are "released."
