What is the importance of bicycles as a primary means of transportation in the community of the book, The Giver? What does this mean about the community?

The most important thing we can infer from the prevalence of bicycles for transportation is the the people of the community rarely venture outside. They stay with their own community, and unless they're appointed to visit outside villages, or have permission (fieldtrips)...... people do not leave. Bicycles are all they need.
