Jonas begins to see just how childlike the community is. Jonas experiences intense emotion like pleasure, pain, joy, and tragedy. He sees just how emotionally illiterate the community is. They cannot process or handle emotions of any substance or intensity. Jonas is maturing beyond the adults in the community. As he gains emotional insight, he will begin to drift farther away from the people he once knew.
