The Giver

The Giver Chapter 2 and 4

The community of the giver puts fourth the idea of sameness or uniform behavior in all the people. for example all children in the giver receive bikes in the same year. the girls all stop wearing hair ribbons at a certain age. and everyone is required to do volunteer work between the ages of 8-12. List some advantages of having every child in a society receive the same privileges at the same time.

This is done out of conformity and control. The elders use these uniform markers to keep a sense of "normality" and equality. The idea is that no child is better than the other. They all evolve at a similar rate. All the children can share a similar experience and feel similar feelings. We, however, know that not all children are the same and certainly don't evolve at the same rate. The ugly downside of this is when children are not seen as "normal".
