In what ways do the 'memories' passed from the giver to receiver differ from real memories?

The memories passed from the Giver to the receiver are different than real memories because they are the collective memories of the society. Each time the memories are passed down from one generation to the next, they go through some form of change.... like storytelling before the advent of written word. The Giver's memories are his own, thus, they are not real memories.
