How are the two times when Jonas transmits a memory to Gabriel contradictory?

Both times Jonas gives Gabriel memories, he does so to calm him. The first time, he gives him happy peaceful memories to help him sleep. In Chapter 22, he needs Gabriel to sleep in order to keep them both safe..... to keep from being detected by the planes that fly overhead, so he gives him memories of exhaustion.
