Jonas' journey is difficult and taxing. His body is being conditioned physically, all while his mind has to stay sharp in order to avoid detection. Jonas memories and care serve to make Gabriel comfortable. As they travel along, Jonas begins to enjoy all the things he's never been privy to, except through the Giver's trasmissions. He worries about starving, and yet, he continues to be amazed by the beauty of nature. When inclement weather arrives, Jonas and Gabe both cry as a result of weakness and hunger. Jonas is afraid, but when he reaches the hill and sees the light..... the hope of Elsewhere lays directly ahead of him.
