Daily dream telling seems to be a mechanism for parents to spy on their children's inner thoughts. Through this sharing, the Elders (through parents) can control "unorthodox" ideas that their children are entertaining and "treat" them for it. Jonas’s mother, for example, discovers that Jonas is having sexual thoughts and needs to take pills that will suppress them.
