According to the Giver, what is the purpose of remembering pain? What example of that purpose does he give Jonas?

Remembering the pain enables the Giver to give advice based upon memories. One example the Giver gave Jonas was a time when the citizens petitioned for more births. Based on his memories of starvation and war due to overpopulation, the Giver advises against it.
