Do the characters in the texts on this course really learn anything from their encounters with the Other?

Does this question refer to The Garden Party by Katherine Mansfield? If so, you have placed it in the wrong category. Please advise.
Laura Sheridan, the main character, is extremely upset by her family's lack of empathy and concern about their neighbor's death. Thus, she is the only one affected by the event. None-the-less, her concern is short-lived. Laura is too young and immature to truly absorb her newfound feelings, and shortly after, joins in the party with her family.
