Unlike the rest of her family, Laura enjoys keeping busy..... she is a part of the action, she relates to the workers, and she takes in her surroundings. Laura is cordial to everyone, complimentary to the chef, and she is self-confidant. When Laura learns of Mr. Scott's death she is empathetic, and she wants to help the family, but she doesn't know how. When she is finally given the opportunity to visit the family and bring them a basket of food, she feels out of place and apologetic for her appearance, something that didn't phase her only a few hours before. Seeing Mr. Scott’s peaceful face, Laura comes to see herself as she truly is: frivolous and naïve. She feels a deep sense of shame for having come to the Scott house dressed as she is and the only comfort she can provide is leftover food. For a brief moment Laura is envious of Mr. Scott, he has escaped society’s expectations and is answerable to no one.
