What freshwater fish to put in a 20 gallon long tank?

I have a empty long 20 gallon fish tank and don't know what freshwater fish to put in it. I'd like to get a bala shark but know it would outgrow the tank. I'd like to also know what the biggest fish I could get for my 20 gallon.
