the novels first and second chapters introduce reef and leeza separtely while the third chapter includes both of them. what is the effect of seeing them presented in this manner?

We get a sense of both people separately first. We see them independent of each other. When they are finally put together, we see their personality traits in the light of each other. The reader can see how each character compares, contrasts, and juxtaposes with each other.
