How does Gus grow up throughout the fault in our stars?

I think Augustus must come to terms with his own battle with cancer. I'm not sure he is as dynamic a character as Hazel is but he does venture out of his comfort zone, to Amsterdam, and he tries his best to deal with his cancer with Hazel by his side.
