Basically they indulge in literature, music, and art. These are what Roderick says he is passionate about. The narrator hopes to take Roderick's mind off his problems.

The narrator went to see Roderick because he asked the narrator to come. Roderick spent those days playing his music reading potery and enjoying each others company. The narrator also tried to figure the mystery surrounding usher.
