The works of art in the story are dark, gloomy..... or "gothic". The darkness reflects the stories events, all throughout the text..... there is little to no light. Examples of this can be found in the house's appearance, furnishings, inhabitants...... and most specifically, the inhabitants' demeanors. Another example would be Madeline's emtombment, which occured while she was still alive.
