The Redcrosse Knight is hero of Book One, although many heroes are presented in the novel. The Redcrosse wears the emblem of Saint George, patron saint of England; a red cross on a white background. This emblem continues to be the flag of England today. In Canto X. the Redcross Knight is declared to be the real Saint George, and learns that he is of English ancestry, having been stolen by a sprite and raised in Faerieland. At the conclusion of Book I, he slays the dragon that has terrorized and destroyed Eden. He then marries Una.
