Why does Gilgamesh want to slay Hawawa?

Gilgamesh needs to prove his heroism. He cant go into the mountains until he defeats the guardian. Gilgamesh vows, "since a man cannot pass beyond the final end of life, I want to set off into the mountains, to establish my renown there."[
