This quote exposes the young woman's hubris. She has been empowered by Mr. Dwight's words, and the advance on her story, thus, she is unable to see past what she envisions for her future and the actually reality of being a writer. While in the restaurant, she is oblivious to the world around her, when in fact, she should have taken it all in. Instead, her fiance is the one who takes notice and relates his own, detailed observations. This directly contrasts with Mr. Dwight's comment that the girl has excellent powers of observation, as detailed in her book. As a result, the reader immediately realizes that she doesn't appear to be what we first believed, nor, does her vision of the future.
