The End of the Affair Themes

Hatred

Hatred is a feeling that is a characteristic of the main character. Talented, but not very famous writer Maurice Bendrix conceives a book about hate. This feeling is burning in Maurice’s soul, because his beloved woman decides to interrupt their love affair without any explanation. Maurice also hates Henry Miles. For everything... Even for weakness... Hatred is the only feeling, which is left in Bendrix after losing his love. This makes him the brightest character in the book. Moreover, the first third of the novel, where Maurice glitters like a shooting star, which is given to the power of his feelings, is the most amazing.

Love and jealousy

When Maurice and Sarah meets for the first time, she looks happy despite difficult time. It is unusual and that why Maurice falls in love with her. Maurice likes her sincerity. This sincerity pleases and torments him. He measures love with jealousy. He is angry and he torments her, because Sarah does not know this feeling. Maurice does not believe Sarah and he is jealous of her of everything. He listens to her every word. He is looking for the hidden meaning everywhere. He hates her non-involvement in jealousy. Jealousy eats and destroys him from within.

Religion, God

Reading the book, the reader seems to sneak through the religious-mystical fog, but in the end, there is definitely light. Finding God is a very difficult, multifaceted and ephemeral theme that can easily avert the reader. Greene does it vaguely, hardly distinguishable, but God hovers between the lines, moves the heroes of the novel, becomes a prism, through which they look at life. Sarah and Maurice, who do not believe in God, too often talk and think about Him. And now, the triangle suddenly turns into a square – God interferes in the relationship. Everyone turns to Him, argues with Him, hates Him, makes vows, breaks vows and ultimately believes. This is the terrible truth.
