Wilburn is a child at the orphange. He is twelve-years-old and has a clubfoot. Like Little Tree, Wilburn is ostracized, and the boys naturally find compainionship in each other. Wilburn says that he isn't bothered by the way he is treated, but he wets his bed at night and cries in his sleep..... we can infer that he likes to present a hard exterior to hide the hurt he feels inside.
