What does Granpa throw at the road? Why? Chapter 20c

Granpa throw his shoes on the road. He and Little Tree remove their shoes and throw them away because they can't feel the road under their feet. Little Tree removes his first.... and Granpa throws his away first. The shoes..... are no longer needed.
