The Drover's Wife

How does euphemism “mastered her” help the reader understand the reality of the drover’s wife’s situation?

Read paragraph 22.
The fire would have mastered her but for four excited bushmen who arrived in the nick of time

The fire would have mastered her but for four excited bushmen who arrived in the nick of time.

In context, mastered her would be defined as "defeated". Had the bushmen not arrived, the Drover's Wife would have lost her home to the flames of the fire.
