Which events remind them that their lives are not normal?

The annex members have constant reminders that their lives are not normal. They have no privacy, shortages of food, no knowledge of what is going on in the outside world except for radio reports and news from the people helping them. Each member of the annex has to be careful and stay quiet..... socializing is forbidden until the workers go home.
