When Anne begins her diary, she christens it "Kitty", personifying the diary and considering it a friend with whom she can share confidences. In Anne's own words, she was prompted to keep a diary because she didn't have a friend.

Now I'm back to the point that prompted me to keep a diary in the first place: I don't have a friend.
