What makes writing in a diary a strange experience for Anne Frank?

I don't think Anne ever felt she had a confidant before. Her diary, she names it Kitty, becomes a source of self-discovery and a vehicle of her coming of age. She shares her inner most thoughts and longings which is a strange experience for her.
